Honda plans to defend Civic Type R Nurburgring Lap Record

The Honda Civic Type R could get hotter.

The new hot hatch set a record for the fastest front-wheel drive car on the Nurburgring and the Japanese automaker isn?t shying away from defending the title.?If someone takes our fastest lap, we?ll take it back,? said chief engineer Hisayuki Yagi. That doesn?t mean Honda would just strap a new driver into the existing Civic Type R, or find a more aggressive route around the track. ?We didn?t leave ourselves any margin of safety in that lap. We would have to modify the car,? he said.

There is ?headroom for more power from the engine,? Yagi told Top Gear, along with acknowledging the possibility of shedding around 110 lbs from its weight if the lap was contended.

The 2015 Civic Type R is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 305 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, while the car carries a curb weight of 3,037 lbs.

It?s likely that a hotter Honda Civic Type R won?t arrive anytime soon, if at all. Of course, if another automaker is willing to take its hot hatch and beat out the Civic Type R?s record, then Honda would have no choice but to respond.
